Five Sales, $3.98 Million: Pokemon Sweeps the Top Five TCG Sales of October 11 to 17

The chart in this issue shows the five biggest TCG sales of the week of October 11 to 17 as reported by SI Collectibles: $1,037,000 for a PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachu at Goldin, $960,000 for a complete PSA 10 run of the 19 Legendary Collection holos, and three sales of $660,000 each for a Plasma Storm Full Art Lugia EX, a second Art Academy Pikachu and a reverse-holo Southern Islands Mew, all PSA 10.

What the shape says

The week's total of $3,977,000 was up about 34 percent from $2.96 million the week before. Two Art Academy Pikachus made up about $1.7 million of it, or 43 percent. They are 2015 Art Academy contest promos, printed about 100 times per winning design and never sold in packs, and they are a reminder that the very top of the Pokemon market is increasingly driven by cards with tiny print runs rather than by the famous pack pulls. It can reset fast, too: a PSA 10 of the same Raincoat design sold for $8.4 million three weeks earlier.

Why the $660,000 bars need a second look

Three sales at exactly $660,000, on the same venue and the same day, for three cards from three different eras, is not impossible, but it is unusual enough that we want to see the venue's own lot results before treating them as separate comps. If they were sold together, or reported as an average, each card's real price could be quite different. The Pack Report charts them as reported and will update the story if the lot detail changes the picture.
