Why a chart cannot show it
Scaled to the Monday sale, the two earlier bars are a fraction of a pixel high. That is not a drawing problem; it is the information. Price charts work when a card moves within a category: a 2x, a 5x, even a 20x over a few years can be read as a trend. A 440x in one sale, on a card with 57 copies in the grade and no intervening public sales, is not a trend. It is the card being moved from one category to another, from a scarce modern promo priced against other promos to a trophy priced against the Illustrator and the Snap cards, and that move was made by two bidders on one night.
What the earlier sales still tell you
More than you might think. $12,600 and $19,200 are what the market, with many participants, thought a PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachu was worth as a promo. $8.4 million is what two participants thought it was worth as a trophy. The true price of the next copy to sell will be set by how many of the other 56 owners decide to find out, and by whether a third trophy buyer exists. Our estimate, for what it is worth: well above $19,200, well below $8.4 million, and the average of the next three results is the number to use.
The pattern for the other Art Academy cards
There are 22 Art Academy designs from the 2015 contest, each printed in a run of about a hundred. Two have now sold for seven figures (the Mudkip at $3.72 million on September 25 and the Pikachu on Monday). The other twenty are, as of this morning, still priced as promos. Whether they move is the question for October, and the answer will tell us whether this was a category change for the Art Academy series or for two cards in it.
