Three weeks after a PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachu sold for $8.4 million at Fanatics Collect, another PSA 10 of the same card sold for $1,037,000 at Goldin on Sunday, October 11. It was still the biggest TCG sale of the week. Pokemon took all five of the week's top sales, according to SI Collectibles' weekly tally published Monday, October 19, for $3,977,000 combined, up from $2.96 million the week before. All five sold on October 11 and all were graded PSA 10.

The Raincoat Pikachu resets

The Art Academy cards come from a Pokemon Art Academy illustration contest run through the Nintendo 3DS game from late 2014 into early 2015. Winning drawings were printed as 2015 promo cards and each winner received about 100 copies of their own card; none were sold in packs or at retail. Fujishima's design shows Pikachu in a red raincoat and hat with an orange umbrella, and it has become the most wanted of them.

On September 28 a PSA 10 Raincoat Pikachu sold at Fanatics Collect for $8.4 million including buyer's premium, the second-highest price ever paid for a Pokemon card. Three weeks later, a PSA 10 of the same design sold for $1,037,000, about 88 percent lower. With roughly 100 copies printed and dozens already graded PSA 10, the grade is the card's normal condition rather than a scarce one, so a single record bid was always a fragile anchor for the rest of the population. The new price is still far above where the card traded before this summer, when PSA 10s changed hands in five figures. The second Art Academy card on the list, Meli's Pikachu design, sold for $660,000 at Fanatics Weekly. Together the two contest Pikachus were about $1.7 million of the week's total.

The Legendary Collection run

The second-biggest sale was not a single card but a complete set of the 19 holos from 2002's Legendary Collection, 1/110 to 19/110, every one graded PSA 10, including Charizard, Zapdos and Dark Blastoise. The sale data describes the lot as holos without saying whether they are the standard holos or the reverse-holo "fireworks" versions the set is known for. The price points to the reverse holos. Compare like for like, using Rip Station's engine and public comps: a PSA 10 reverse-holo Charizard (3/110) sits near $121,100 and a PSA 10 reverse-holo Dark Blastoise (4/110) near $36,000, against about $1,900 for a standard-holo Dark Blastoise in PSA 10. Nineteen standard holos in PSA 10 would not come close to $960,000; a full reverse-holo run with a premium for completing it plausibly would. Legendary Collection is one of the 12 sets in the vintage half of the Pack Report Index, where it read flat this week.

Three sales at $660,000

A Plasma Storm Full Art Lugia EX, the Meli Art Academy Pikachu and a reverse-holo Southern Islands Mew each sold for exactly $660,000 at Fanatics Weekly on the same day. Identical prices across three very different cards are unusual, and the Lugia stands out on its own: public comps put a PSA 8 copy of the same 134/135 Full Art near $4,300. They may be accurate, but until the venue's lot-level results are public we would treat each as a reported price rather than a clean comp for its card.
