The Torchic closes tonight
Alt's auction that opened August 28 closes today, September 10. As of September 5 the live bids were $1,968,000 on the PSA 10 Torchic Gold Star (nineteen exist) and $90,336 on the PSA 9 (233 exist), both with premium. If the PSA 10 bid holds or rises, it will pass the $1,020,000 Rayquaza Gold Star of August 30 as the most expensive English-language Pokemon card ever sold, and it will do so eleven days later. Monday's issue will carry both results and what they do to the Gold Star ladder.
Goldin's undercard
The Call of Legends Lugia at $367,220 was the headline of Goldin's pop culture auction that closed September 9 and 10, but three other Pokemon lots matter. A PSA 10 Call of Legends Rayquaza made $97,600 after 23 bids, the third PSA 10 of that card to sell in five weeks and the lowest of the three (Chart of the Day). A PSA 10 2006 Nintendo Black Star promo Mew #040 made $88,450 after 26 bids. And a 2014 World Championships No. 3 Trainer, CGC Pristine 10 and the only copy in that grade, made $74,420. The trophy trainers from the 2010s had been priced in the low tens of thousands; this summer's results have been pulling them up a tier.
Six days to 30th Celebration
Pokemon TCG: 30th Celebration releases worldwide on Wednesday, September 16: 199 cards, every card foil, six per pack, thirty Pikachus, thirty Classic Collection reprints and the new Futuristic rare tier. TCG Live's largest update of the year lands the day before. The modern basket has not posted a positive reading in nine; the two weeks after a launch are usually when the previous sets soften further and the reprinted vintage art gets a bid. We will have the first post-launch reading on September 21.
Fates Collide moves
Fates Collide, the 2016 XY set, had read 0.0 percent in every Index reading since August 13: no new comps, no re-marks. This week it moved 6.3 percent across its ten cards on a batch of fresh public sales. It is the largest single-set move in the modern basket since Evolutions' two 6 percent weeks in August, and like Evolutions, it is a 2016 set rather than a current one. Of the four modern sets up this week, three are built on reprints or 2016-era art. The sets going down are the current ones.
