The Index is a proprietary model built by Rip Station, which publishes The Pack Report. Method, full history and the trend chart.

This reading is October 8 against October 1, the first clean seven-day comparison since the engine paused on September 15.

  • Vintage basket: +2.7% (median of 116 cards; 77 up, 11 flat, 28 down)
  • Modern basket: -1.6% (median of 112 cards; 36 up, 11 flat, 65 down)

How the index is built

Each basket takes twelve active sets and, within each, the ten most-traded cards. Vintage means 1999 to 2007 plus the promo series; modern means 2016 onward. Every card is priced by Rip Station's own engine from public comps, separately for every grader-and-grade lane. A card's weekly change is the average across its lanes; a set's reading is the median of its cards; the basket headline is the median of all cards. A flat reading means "no news," not "no demand."

Reading the week

This is the number we have been waiting for since the engine came back: a true weekly reading, not a catch-up, and it is +2.7 percent. Before the pause, the largest weekly reading was +0.9 percent and we called anything over 1 percent a rally. The vintage basket is now up roughly 14 percent since August 13, with the EX era and the e-Reader sets (Expedition, Skyridge) leading and Legendary Collection, which had almost no comps in August, now the strongest line in the basket on the reverse Charizard and reverse Pikachu. Base Set (-0.3 percent) and Team Rocket (-1.2 percent) were the two sets that did not participate; the First Edition Charizard's $1 million sale is already in Base Set's marks, and Team Rocket has not had a headline sale since the Index began.

Modern fell for the third reading in a row, -1.6 percent, and the pattern is unchanged: the current and recent sets (Japanese 151, Classic Collection, Ascended Heroes, Paldea Evolved, BREAKpoint) lower, the 2016 sets built on vintage art (Evolutions +8.3 percent, Generations +2.1) higher, and Celebrations (+1.5 percent) bouncing after three weeks of declines. Modern is down about 5 percent since August 13.

Movers

Up: a PSA 8 EX Unseen Forces Entei from $1,721 to $3,967; a PSA 10 Legendary Collection Psyduck from $1,000 to $1,612, the set's commons in 10 following the Pikachu; a PSA 9 BREAKpoint Suicune from $48 to $190; the PSA 10 XY-P promo Pikachu ($20,001 to $32,400) still in the window. Down: a PSA 3 Base Set Raichu from $58 to $31, a CGC 5.5 Base Set Gyarados from $34 to $15, and a PSA 10 Classic Collection Umbreon Star from $426 to $335.

The Index ran in The Pack Report, October 8, 2026: The First Trophy Pikachu Is Up for Auction, and PSA Is at 8.2 Million. Published by Rip Station.
